..............Ucas clearing?

Hi guys! My friend applied to go to uni this september through Ucas but when his result was out, he didn't meet the cut off mark because it was an unconditional offer, but now his status has changed from 'unconditional' to 'unsuccessful' and it says it's in clearing. What does this mean? someone should explain in details asap please.
