Memorial day, does America really remember the fallen?

I am in the Marine Corps and yesterday I took part in a color guard at my church. The service acknowledged the military service of the people in attendance and those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. My obligation required me to attend all three services, the first service had traditional music (hyms for a generally older crowd) and the following two have contemporary music for the younger generations. Before and after the first services I had people coming up to me thanking me for my service and with stories about when they were in the core. But during the tradition service I have more people that came up to me with eyes that left a lasting impression on me. The second and third service not so much. Why is this so? I am not making the claim that my congregation speaks for every single social generation. I am just wondering if America's generations are truly grasping our troop's loss of life. This is not a posting for political opinions.
